A Telegram
For Maricris Sioson, 1969-1991
In April 1991, Maricris Sioson, a 22-year-old dancer from the Philippines, arrived in Japan to work at the Faces Club in Fukushima. Five months later she was admitted to a hospital, and on Sept. 14, 1991, she died. - "Japan Hasn't Stopped Exploiting Asian Women", The New York Times, September 24, 1994
A telegram arrived yesterday About my sister Dead in Japan. Nothing else. Nothing about her medical report or police documents. Just a short note of condolences from the DFA.
My mother cried for Jesus My father fainted when he heard I had never seen him so scared.
At supper, we sat quietly trying to avoid the sadness written on each of our faces. Thinking of my sister,
Their only daughter, In the land of the rising sun
To work abroad Brought home to our aching hearts.
At night I feel lonely with my father’s silence
and my mother’s tears.
