I. Module Title: Collaborative Commentaries
II. Approach/Technique Used
Collaborative Approach, Critical Thinking Skill, Reader Response Criticism
III. Rationale
This is a technique that is employed after the students have already completed their personal reading of a poem. It is a good approach to trigger off a small group discussion that holds and honors diverse perceptions or viewpoints in interpreting the same literary text.
IV. Objectives
The student will:
1. recognize the points of view of different readers;
2. make assumptions or draw conclusions based on explicit and implicit information;
3. identify multiple levels of meaning;
4. improve their observation and analytical skills; and
5. improve their ability to work collaboratively.
V. Time Frame
1 meeting (1.5 hrs.)
VI. Concepts Taught
Analysis, critical thinking and collaborative skills
VII. Materials Required
“My Retreat” by Jose Rizal, 3 ball pens with different colors, 1 whole yellow paper
VIII. Procedures
1. Have the students form a group composing of three members.
2. The first member will pass his/her annotated copy to the second member on the right.
3. Then the second member will concentrate on and make additions to the first member’s interpretation then he/she will pass it to their third member.
4. Subsequently, the third member will also add his/her commentary to both of the previous members’ commentary and this process continues until the first member has his/her paper back. (Note: It is important that students must understand that they are to expand on the first member’s ideas and/or questions, not simply add new ideas of their own.)
5. Make the students present their work in class so that everyone can benefit from each other’s interpretations.
6. Discuss the poem critically with the students.
IX. Assessment
1. Observe the students participation during discussion.
2. Evaluate the student’s independent commentary by focusing on the quality of their interpretations.
X. Feedback
