Course Description
This is a course on the literary works of Jose Rizal. Students will be introduced to the historical elements or narratives surrounding the birth of his thoughts, ideals and beliefs. The course will discuss Rizal’s life, R.A. 1425, excerpts from his Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, some poems, plays and socio-political essays. The works will be given multiple meanings and interpretations – postcolonial, feminist, historical, sociological, formalist, biographical, etc. A lot of current issues would be discussed alongside with the interpretation and analyses of the texts.
Course Objective
At the end of the course, the students shall be challenged:
1. to know Philippine history -- especially the period that gave birth to Jose Rizal;
2. to gain insight in the cultural/moral values of the Filipinos as depicted by the characters and ideas of the writings;
3. to analyze/evaluate/assess literary intent and compare it with what were discussed in published analyses/interpretations;
4. to analyze the various issues surrounding the experiences divulged by the writings;
5. to decipher or give multiple meanings and interpretations of the literary works; and
6. to develop ethical judgment on contemporary issues relevant to experiences tackled by the readings.
